Slovene Company Buys Albania Online Provider

15 10 2007 Tirana_Slovenia’s main telecommunications company, Telekom Slovenije, has signed an agreement to buy a majority stake in Albanian Online Service Provider, AOL SP.

Monday’s agreement envisages Telekom Slovenije acquiring a 75 per cent stake in the privately-owned Albanian company with its headquarters in Tirana.

AOL SP is one of the leading alternative internet and telecommunications services providers in the country with 3,000 subscribers, controlling 75 percent of the Albanian market.

The Slovenian company plans to invest €18-20 million in the development of its new Albanian acquisition over the next five years.

Monday’s deal gives Telekom Slovenije access to the emerging Albanian electronic communications market which is expected to expand rapidly in coming years.

There are only 285,000 fixed phone lines in Albania, approximately nine per 100 people.

AOL SP is a major provider of internet, including voice telephony, services in Albania, and is the only one with access to an independent optical and wireless network.

In addition to its own network, the company also leases network capacity from the former monopoly carrier, Albtelecom.

The company's biggest competitive advantages on the market are its customer base, DSL broadband and cable infrastructure, its fibre-optics and wireless network and its acquired licences and permits.

AOL SP is also an 88 per cent shareholder in the Albanian Fibre Backbone, AFB, which operates the largest fibre-optics network in Tirana.

Last year the company generated €2.66 million in revenue with profits of almost €500,000. (Birn)
