European Union anti-dumping measures against China and Vietnam shoes have caused a revitalization of the Albanian shoes industry, according to Eurostat’s data. Exports of shoes from Albania to the European Union for January-November 2005, reached 6 million pairs, a 16% increase compared to 2005. In term of value, shoe exports reached EUR 56.8 million.
Last year, an EU anti-dumping investigation discovered state subsides for the shoe industry in China and Vietnam. EU imposed a 19% extra duty for imports by those countries, improving conditions for the Albanian industry.
Shoes and textiles are the core of Albania's exports. 2006 data indicate an improved situation in this sector. In the past year the shoes industry struggled due to a strong local currency and a strong competition. This industry was recreated in Albania through joint investments from Italian companies that have benefited from low salary levels and low profit taxes.
