SP refer the Greece border agrement to Constitutional Court before ratification in the parliament


TIRANA – Oct 15 – (Alblink) – The Socialist Party is expected to refer the Albania-Greece sea border agreement to the Constitutional Court prior to its ratification in the Albanian parliament. Head of socialists Edii Rama announced the new move during an interview for "Top Show" program hosted by Top Channel TV journalist Alban Dudushi. He said a group of experts has been set up lately to evaluate claims set forth by individuals or different civil society organizations.

Such move comes only a few days prior to the ratification of the agreement in parliament.

Article 131 of teh constitution specifies among other things, "The Constitutional Court decides on: a) compliance of the law with the constitution or international agreements as foreseen in article 122; b) compliance of international agreement with the constitution prior to their ratification. Thus, an intervention by the Constitutional Court, prior to the ratification, can block such legal initiative.
According to head of socialists, sovereignty, territorial integrity and interests of Albanians must be respected above all. He has requested transparence by the government as to the publication of all data, maps and other documentation contained in the agreement signed by Berisha and Karamanlis governments.

In the last three days, Rama annnounced the set up of a commission of experts. Another senior exponent of the Socialist Party, Mr. Pandeli Majo appealed to the president to summon the National Security Council on this issue. He said that territory of Albania was neither territory of the Socialist Party, nor territory of the Democratic Party.
