Turkey arrests Albanian police officer for drug trafficking
Three Albanian citizens, including a high-ranking police officer, were caught on Tuesday night attempting to bring a large quantity of heroin into Turkey.
Albanian media quoted police sources as identifying the arrested police officer as Altin Mura, who is based at the Tirana International Airport in Rinas.
When approached by Today's Zaman, officials at the Albanian Embassy in Ankara said they had no information regarding the issue.
“Except for the information that a large quantity of heroin was in question, no other details have been revealed amid an ongoing investigation that is to lead to a crackdown on an international drug ring,”.
In early May, Albania's Foreign Ministry announced that one of its senior diplomats had been arrested in Turkey on charges of drug trafficking. The ministry later reported that Agim Haxhiu, second secretary at the Albanian Embassy in Skopje, was arrested on May 2 in western Turkey after his car was searched by police. He is currently in prison near İstanbul. Albania's Foreign Ministry did not comment at the time on local media reports that Haxhiu was caught with 65 kilograms of heroin, but said he had been stripped of his immunity and would face prosecution in Turkey. Albania is a transit point for drug trafficking in southeastern Europe. (Source: Zaman; Makfax; Albanian Times)
