28 March 2008 Pristina _ Kosovo's independence is the best solution for ensuring peace and stability in the region, U.S. President George Bush says.
“I support the independence of Kosovo because I think it is the best for the region and I think it is most likely to lead to peace,” Bush told the Associated Press news agency.
According to the Associated Press, Bush expressed his hope that the “Serbian government will see that the Serbs in Kosovo are treated with respect and that their rights as a minority are respected.”
Bush also said Serbia “will eventually help Kosovo succeed as opposed to trying to hinder their success.”
Washington was among the first to recognise the independence of Kosovo, following its declaration on February 17.
Bush was speaking just days ahead of the NATO Summit in Bucharest, after which he will be visiting some countries in the region, including Croatia.
In support of Kosovo, Bush announced last week that the U.S. is to furnish Kosovo with military aid, which will help fund a new security force to be created in the territory. (BalkanInsight)
