TIRANA, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The toll from Albania's army depot blast on March 15 has risen to 24 after three women died of wounds in hospital, the country's Health Ministry said Wednesday.
The three women died at an Italian hospital in Brindisi where they were undergoing treatment after sustaining serious injuries in the explosions.
The explosions occurred as workers were dismantling old shells at an army depot near Vora, about 15 km west of the capital Tirana.
A UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination team is in Albania to carry out a rapid evaluation of the situation following the blast, which also injured nearly 300 people and damaged more than 2,000 homes within a 4-km radius.
Up to 90,000 tons of aging ammunition in need of destruction is reportedly stored at 26 sites throughout Albania. (Xinhua)
