TIRANA, Albania: The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will invest more than €120 million (US$177 million) next year in Albanian energy and infrastructure projects as well as private projects, the bank said Thursday.
"We have a solid pipeline for 2008 of over €120 million and we are already working for 2009," Dan Berg, head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Albania, said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press.
Berg said the bank would finance a new energy efficiency fund, to limit widespread wastage in the country's electricity distribution system.
It also plans to help fund four road projects, the construction of a passenger ferry terminal at the port of Durres, and a new terminal at Mother Theresa International Airport in Tirana, as well as provide loans to improve landline telephone services.
Since starting operations in Albania in 1992, the bank has invested about €400 million in Albanian projects, with about a quarter of the money going to ventures in the energy sector. (IHT)
