Albanian Opposition to Protest Poverty, Corruption
20 December 2007 Tirana _ The Albanian Opposition, headed by the Socialist Party, will launch a series of protests on Thursday in Tirana’s Skanderbeg Square, against corruption and poverty.
“Albanians today are morally on their knees, because we have the most corrupt government in our history, which can only compete with Cambodia and Cameroon,” said Erjon Brace, the deputy head of the Socialist parliamentary group.
Brace announced that a series of rallies will be held all over the country to protest against the “bad government” of the ruling center-right coalition headed by the Democratic Party of Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
On Sunday, the European Statistics Institute, Eurostat, published a study in which Albania is shown to have the lowest per capita income in the region.
According to the study Albanians have only 21 per cent of the purchasing power of the average EU citizen, while prices of basic essentials in Albania, including food, are among the highest in Europe.
“This dire situation is a direct result of corruption,” said Brace.
A report published in December by Transparency International ranked Albania as the country with highest level of perceived corruption in the region. (Birn)
