Prishtina, Nov. 22 (Albanian Times) -- The United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) urged political parties in Kosovo on Wednesday to set up the province's government as soon as possible following the announcement of the election results.
"This is not an issue of the UNMIK, but of the political parties in Kosova," said UNMIK spokesman Alexander Ivanko.
Ivanko told a press conference in the Kosova capital Prishtina that it is the stand of UNMIK that the institutions of self-government should be formed as soon as possible and on the grounds of the political reality in the field.
On Monday evening, Kosova's Central Election Commission (CEC) published the first official preliminary results of Saturday's elections, in which between 50 and 55 percent of the 1.5 million voters turned out.
With around 90 percent of the votes counted, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) led by former KLA commander Hashim Thaci is leading with 34 percent of the vote.
The PDK is followed by the ruling Democratic League of Kosova (LDK) which has seen its support drop significantly from 45.4 percent in 2004 to just 22 percent of the vote.
The Alliance for a New Kosova led by businessman Behgjet Pacolli won 12.1 percent of the vote, while former LDK member Nexhat Daci's Democratic League of Dardania won 10.4 percent.
The Alliance for the Future of Kosova led by former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj increased its share of the vote from 7 percent in 2004 to around 10 percent.
The CEC has said it would announce the official results of the elections on Dec. 1, and the UNMIK chief should confirm them on Dec. 4.
Serbia wants to retain sovereignty of the province which has since 1999 been run by the UNMIK. Kosova's Albanian majority expects nothing less than independence once the deadline for the talks expires on Dec. 10. (Xinhua)
