Ski Resort Opens in Macedonia

01 10 2007 Albanian Times: Skopje _ A ski resort, planned to become one of the largest in the world, will host its first visitors this winter in Macedonia’s Kozuf mountain.

Kozuf Ski Centre, located near Macedonia’s border with Greece, is to become a year-round, all-inclusive resort.

It is to include over 1,000 chalets, hotels, ski lifts, conference, business and multimedia centres, entertainment facilities as well as its own heliport.

Investors Ski Centar KOZUF Ltd plan to finish the resort, to be built on 54 hectares, by the end of 2009.

Although much of the resort is still under construction and there is as yet no accommodation, Ski Centar KOZUF’s marketing director, Pero Tanevski, told Balkan Insight on Wednesday that a promotional weekend skiing will start from December.

“On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the visitors can come, see where we are, what we offer, to ski a little and to see its beauty”, Tanevski says.

A ski lift, taking skiers to one of the summits at 2,200 metres, will be ready in time.

“Next year the ski complex should get its first accommodation units, as talks for two major hotel investments are under way”, Tanevski said.

“The total investment in the resort will amount to about $80 million”, Tanevski said, “and we have spent around $13 million so far.”

The investors hope to attract visitors from all over Europe, with the largest number from Greece.

The nearby towns of Kavadarci and Gevgelija are expected to benefit as the resort creates new jobs.
