29 11 2007 Bucharest _ Romanian local authorities took measures on Thursday to deal with a fresh outbreak of bird flu in a remote village in Tulcea county, near the border with Ukraine.
The authorities put in place a protection zone, and installed disinfection filters around the affected area to prevent the spread of avian influenza.
Romania’s veterinary and food safety body said late on Wednesday that the H5N1 virus had killed 31 poultry on a farm in the Tulcea region, with an additional 49 birds being destroyed to control the outbreak.
While the culling of birds is underway, doctors are going door-to-door to vaccinate people against regular flu to boost their overall immunity.
There has been no reported case of the potentially-fatal bird flu infecting humans during this latest outbreak.
The most recent of Romania's previous 162 avian influenza outbreaks ended in July 2006. (BIRN)
