20 11 2007 Pristina _ The vice-president of a major political party in Kosovo resigned from his position today after his party failed to emerge from Saturday's poll with the largest number of votes.
Eqrem Kryeziu, first vice-president of the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, had promised before the elections that he would resign if the party did not receive more than 40 percent of the vote.
''I have offered my resignation to the party," Kryeziu told reporters on Monday. His resignation will now have to be accepted by the party's presidency.
According to preliminary results, the LDK won only about 22 percent of the vote, coming second after the Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, led by Hashim Thaci.
The LDK has had to deal with a series of internal problems since the death of its founder, Kosovo's late President Ibrahim Rugova, in January 2006. In all four elections held in Kosovo since 1999, the LDK gained most votes.
But after Rugova's death the party split, and Nexhat Daci, one of its most respected figures, broke away to form the Democratic League of Dardania, LDD. (Birn)
