Albania Celebrates Independence Day

28 11 2007 Tirana _ Albanian officials gathered on Wednesday in the southern coastal city of Vlora to mark the 95th anniversary of their country's declaration of independence.

President Bamir Topi, Prime Minister Sali Berisha and opposition leader Edi Rama attended a ceremony in the square where independent Albania's flag was raised for the first time in 1912.

The celebration started with a visit to the tomb of Ismail Qemali, Albanian’s founding father.

“Today we all honour the memory of this wise man, and all those who signed the declaration of independence, as this document is the most important legal act in the history of our nation,” Topi said.

The President used the occasion to launch an appeal to the political class across all parties to cooperate for the sake of leading their country towards a prosperous future.

“We should become aware of the need to work together for success, the fruits of which we will enjoy together, as we are also doomed to share failure. The people still believe in politics,” he said.

Before it declared its independence on November 28, 1912 Albania had been part of the Ottoman Empire for over four centuries. (BIRN)
