Gates encourages Macedonia, Croatia and Albania to continue the reforms for NATO membership

Macedonia, Croatia and Albania received support from the US Defence Secretary Robert Gates to continue the reforms on the road to NATO membership, reports MIA. Gates recommended the countries of the Adriatic Charter to speed the work in meeting the standards both in defence and other spheres in the society prior to the NATO Summit in Bucharest.

Macedonian Defence Minister assessed the meeting of the US Defence Secretary Gates with Defence Ministers of Macedonia, Croatia and Albania, as significantly productive.

- We continue to mutually build the regional security. At today's meeting US Defence Secretary Gates did not make any remarks to any of the three states, Elenovski said after the meeting.

He informed that US Defence Secretary reiterated the participation of the Macedonian troops in peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Iraq largely contributing in establishment of democracy in the two countries.

SEE defense ministers within the Southeast Europe Defense Ministerial (SEDM) process, along with ministers of SEDM monitoring states will discuss Monday in Kiev on the future engagement of SEE multinational peacekeeping forces. Moreover, the 2008 annual exercise plan is to be adopted, while Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Ukraine are to be welcomed as full-fledged members of the SEDM process and multinational peacekeeping forces respectively.

Minister Elenovski will affirm the contribution of our country to this process as preparedness of Macedonia to host the next ministerial in 2008 when the tenth anniversary will be marked from signing the agreement of multinational peacekeeping force of SEE was signed in Skopje on Sept. 1998. (MRT)
