Social Indicators / Unemployment

Introduction

The economical and social changes of the beginning of the 90’s caused a significant increase of unemployment rate.
The unemployment rate increased until the year 1995, after this year the unemployment begins to fall compared with the previous years. This happened because many of the unemployed individuals during the years 1993-1994 , went out of the registered unemployed scheme because, in compliance with the Law on Privatization of Land, they got arable land in property. The unemployment rate was 12.9 percent at the end of 1995. This positive trend remained unchanged until the end of the year 1996, when it was reduced to 12.3 percent.
Due to the difficult crisis of spring 1997, the unemployment rate increased, reaching 14.9 percent. The increasing tendency remained stable until the end of 1999 when it is 18.4% but the number continuing with decrease in the following next two years.
The number of registered unemployed persons continues to fall in 2004 compared with previous years. This number is decreased with 6 thousand during 2004 and it is reduced with 24 thousands compared with the year 2001 . The registered unemployment rate from 16.4% in 2001 falls in 14.4 % in 2004.
So is for year 2005 where the registered unemployed is decreased with almost 4 thousand persons compared with year 2004.Also the number of persons who are entitled for benefits from unemployment benefit assistance is decreased with 800 persons .In the total of registered unemployment persons , the share of age group over 35 years old is higher. This figures shows the big difficulties that unemployment persons in a certain age have to find job in the labour market.
