10 10 2007 Skopje_ More than 10,000 students, who begin their final year of studies this year, will receive government-funded vouchers to buy computers, Macedonian premier Nikola Gruevski announced on Sunday.
The government’s decision is expected to be voted on in parliament later this week.
The students will receive vouchers worth 12,300 denars (€200) that they can use to buy a computer before December 15 in any store that issues a proper receipt, the government said.
“The government voted for this bill because in a few months these students will step in to the real world”, Gruevski told a news conference. “Our goal is to enable them to develop their informatics skills and to get acquainted with the software that they will use in their work.”
The prime minister said that the vouchers would be forwarded to the faculties by the ministry of finance, and the faculties should then distribute them to all fully-registered student who are now starting their final year at Macedonia`s four state-funded universities.
In order to prevent any misuse, specially-appointed committees from the ministry of the interior and the ministry of finance will cancel the unused vouchers when the campaign ends in December.
New, albeit basic, computers are available in Macedonia for under 10,000 denars (€150) each.
A similar campaign aimed at acquiring 150,000 PCs for elementary schools and high schools in the country, known as “A computer for every child”, was launched in September.
In August, the government cut taxes on computer parts from 18 to 5 per cent. (Birn)
