New Date Set for Montenegro Constitution Debate

Podgorica_ The Montenegrin parliament’s session on a new constitution, scheduled for October 1, has been postponed by two weeks, the assembly’s senior officials decided on Thursday.

Both the opposition and the governing coalition agreed it was necessary to put off the debate to have more time to reach agreement.

Amendments to the draft can be submitted up to five days before the session which will now be held on October 15.

“It is much better to talk without pressure of time. We had talks during the whole week, and we will continue them on Monday”, Zoran Zizic, the representative of the opposition Serb List told Balkan Insight.

He added, though, that he was not sure if agreement would be reached with the governing coalition.

If the two sides fail to agree, the constitution will be adopted by parliament. Otherwise, it will be put to a referendum.

Discussions on a constitution for independent Montenegro started in September 2006, after the Adriatic republic separated from Serbia in June of that year. (BIRN)
