Parliament Escapes Dissolution, Ousts Ex Socialist PM from Presidential Race in 3rd Round
If the parliament fails to elect a president in five rounds, it is dissolved and the country goes to early general elections within 60 days, according to Albania’s constitution
TIRANA – A last minute nominee for the presidential race avoided the dissolution of Albania’s parliament which voted out former Socialist Party Premier Fatos Nano in the third round Saturday, leaving the new candidate, Neritan Ceka, leader of the opposition coalition Democratic Alliance party, and Bamir Topi, deputy leader of the governing Democratic Party-led coalition as the only two challengers.
