Government approves 17 concessionary small power plants

Tirana, 15 March 2007 (AENews) – Albanian government has opened the way for the construction of 17 new small hydro-power plants ranging in power from 2 to 10 Megawatt.

The decision was made yesterday at the Council of Ministers authorizing the Ministry of Economy to commence tender procedures for all the companies interested in Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreements with the government.

Albanian law on concessions provides companies with ability to enter into terms of agreement ranging from 25 to 35 years. Currently, several independent power producers sell their energy to KESH sh.a. at prices ranging from 4 to 6.3 USD/cent.

During the last year private production of energy reached about 100 million Kw/h at a market value of USD 5mn.

According to the government's decision all companies involved will be able to sell their energy to KESH sh.a. at a supervised price covering amortization of investments, providing for a good profit margin.
